Explanation[edit | edit source]

This is the infamous "dong repair" strip, edited so that the "ding" is replaced with "Ohh, banana". In the 1997 Nintendo game Donkey Kong 64, the general objective of the game was to collect Golden Bananas (akin to Mario 64's stars); whenever one was revealed, a soundbite saying "Oh, banana!" would play. The whole "dong" bit is a reference to an internet meme - someone on 4chan edited the box art of said game, ransom note style, such that it read "Expand Dong". Many other imitators soon followed, and soon the character was irrevocably associated with the word "dong".

The description mentions BonziBUDDY, an infamous program that ostensibly acted as an all-purpose Internet helper, represented on-screen by a purple gorilla. It was introduced in 1999 (without the gorilla character) and was discontinued in 2004 after multiple complaints labelled it adware and/or spyware, or just generally finding it useless and annoying. In 2014, the character became a meme after Twitch streamer Joel (of the video game streaming website Vinesauce) held a "Windows XP Destruction" -- that is, taking a virtual copy of Windows XP, pumping it full of viruses, and generally reminiscing about the Internet of the early 2000's -- in which BonziBUDDY featured prominently. Tying in with the above meme, when the program asked for a nickname, Joel chose to enter "Expand Dong". Once the video became viral, Joel soon grew very weary of BonziBUDDY, which is why the author chose not to use the character for this edit.

The author writes:[edit | edit source]

I had to. Also, in terms of Monkey-based memes SRoMG could contribute to, it could be worse. It could be BonziBUDDY. Which, funny enough, the person responsible (Vinesauce's Joel) regrets letting become a meme. And so, out of respect, I didn't do that.

...You don't get a prize of you e-mail him that I did that, nor do you get one if you tell the main streamer Vinny that, either.

Original strip: 1999-07-11.
