Explanation[edit | edit source]

In the original, the fish's defense was to claim that he has a wife and children; however, as he lives in a glass fishbowl -- one not much larger than the fish himself -- Garfield sees through his ruse.

In this edit, the fish instead chooses to recite a sequence of Fibonacci numbers, managing to get to seven-digit numbers before finally being eaten. Apparently, this Garfield classifies such a recitation as "fibbing", and feels that fish so enresidenced shouldn't undertake it.

The author's comment is a reference to Square One Television's Mathnet series. In the episode "The Case of the Willing Parrot", the titular parrot, when prompted by the sequence "1, 1, 2, 3," would say, "5! Eureka!" This clued the detectives in that the owner was fascinated with Fibonacci numbers, which turned out to be the key to finding his inheritance.

The author writes:[edit | edit source]

5! Eureka!
