Explanation[edit | edit source]

Again Garfield dances, this time on the flag of Canada. Again Garfield falls, because the top edge was waxed. Indeed, No. 2294 has previously proven that strips are not required to make sense, but at least this time, Garfield is dancing on and slipping off of a thing. He identifies it as Canada, though, even though it's just the flag. (No denigration intended, but it is not the country itself, just a symbol of it.)

The title is a play on a recurring line in Canada's national anthem, "O Canada", specifically the English version by Robert Stanley Weir where it's "We stand on guard for thee." First found in the first stanza, it is then twice in the chorus, so on the rare occasion that the second through fourth stanzas are also sung, the phrase is sung nine times.

The author writes:[edit | edit source]

There's no rule that strips have to make sense.

Original strips: 1982-03-27, 1991-05-28.
