Explanation[edit | edit source]

The rocket jump is a method of using a weapon to cause the one firing it to jump, usually higher than the character can by the normal method. The weapon Garfield is using here is a Firebomb Launcher from Rise of the Triad, an early, if not the first, video game in which rocket jumping was employed. The strap around Garfield is run through the trigger guard, so that when Garfield stops and gravity and the launcher's momentum pulls it forward, the strap pulls the trigger again.

The author writes:[edit | edit source]

Why should we assume that his landings are causing minor seismic events? Let's make it his propulsion method!

Original strip: 1979-12-05.

Firebomb Launcher sprite from Rise of the Triad Headquarters and used only as a vehicle for parody.

Transcript[edit | edit source]

{Nermal is hopping forward.}
SFX: Hop hop hop
Jon: How cute!
{Garfield observes this, and rocket-jumps in an attempt to do the same.
SFX: BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!
{Nermal and Jon are visibly shaken. Jon holds Garfield down.}
Jon: Somehow, Garfield, your grasp of "cute" is a little shaky.
