Explanation[edit | edit source]

In the original strip, Garfield had been locked up in an asylum after acting uncharacteristically nice; here, it's presumably because of the excess of pudding pops comics.

The author's note refers to the novel/film One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, which ends with the rambunctious mental hospital patient Randle McMurphy being sent in for electroshock therapy and rendered a vegetable; the narrator, Native American "Chief" Bromden, ends up smothering him with a pillow.

The author writes:[edit | edit source]

This was shortly before a Native American man came in and smothered him to death.

Original strips: 1981-01-04, 2001-11-28.
