Explanation[edit | edit source]

In the original, the food was made of "gunk" and had no bullets flying from it. In this one, however, it's made of gun, and thus quite naturally is shooting.

The author's comment makes a pun on the double meaning of "fire": to discharge a weapon, and to terminate one's employment, as should happen should one use gun as an ingredient in cat food. Or any food.

It also makes a reference to the meme originating from CSI: Miami, in which the character played by David Caruso takes off his sunglasses just before the pun in his one-liner.

The author then makes a reference to the "Constantly changing"/"something that sounds or is spelled even a little bit like 'minus'"/"Pudding pops" phenomenon, saying that he won't be surprised if this sparks something similar.

The title is a pun on "Babes and Bullets", a parody of noir detectives found in Garfield: His Nine Lives. Oddly, no bibs are featured in this comic, and they are probably only mentioned in the title for the sake of the pun, and because they're related to food.

The author writes:[edit | edit source]

Someone at the factory should have been... {glasses} ...fired.

(Also, if this spawns a series of strips in which the cat food is made of something that sounds a little bit like and/or is spelled similarly to "gunk", I will... not be surprised.)

Original strips: 1979-10-24, 1979-01-25 (The "BANG! BANG!").

Transcript[edit | edit source]

{Garfield is eating cat food discontentedly.}
SFX: BANG! BANG!
{Two bullets zing out of the food. Garfield checks the box. This is a safe thing to do.}
Label: Ingredient: gun
{Garfield leaves the food, tossing the box behind him. This is also a safe thing to do.}
Garfield: I suspected as much.
