Explanation[edit | edit source]

Originally, Henry was found on the dinner table. Here, the author gives us the option of deciding which definition of "snake" was true and which was pretended, or if something else entirely is the case.

The plumbing snake is a tool used to help clear clogged pipes.

The strip's title, "Petool", is a fusion of the words "pet" and "tool". In addition, the word "Petool" is also a pun on "Metool", one of the names of an enemy from the Mega Man series, though this was likely unintentional.

The author writes:[edit | edit source]

So! In this scenario, is Henry:

a) a snake -- as in the reptile -- that Jon's parents decided would make a good plumbing tool,
b) a snake -- as in the plumbing tool -- that Jon took for a pet despite it not being alive, or
c) some other possibility?

Original strip: 1996-05-04.
