Explanation[edit | edit source]

In the original Garfield strip, Jon Arbuckle and his cat, Garfield, are sitting silently. Jon tells Garfield that he can't think of something to say. Garfield balls up his fist and says, "Darn it, Jon!". Then he spreads his arms and asks Jon angrily how Garfield is supposed to ignore Jon.

The author was never gonna submit this strip but he did it anyway.

Now, take a look at this strip.

In the first version of this edit, Jon Arbuckle and his cat, Garfield, are sitting silently. Jon tells Garfield that he can think of something to say. Garfield replies with a "ĉio" ("everything" in Esperanto). Then Garfield disappears. Jon's hair and shirt have been swapped. Now Jon's hair looks green, and Jon's shirt looks brown. Jon is supposed to be thinking something, but his thought bubble turns static.

In the second version of this edit, Jon Arbuckle and his cat, Garfield, are sitting silently (again). Jon tells Garfield that he can't do it. Garfield balls up his fist, and his nose turns yellow. In the third panel, Garfield's nose turns back to pink, and he spreads his arms, turning away from Jon while speaking German ("Ich muss die wahrheit ignorieren!", possibly meaning "I have to ignore the truth!"). The background changes into the German flag.

In the third version of this edit, Jon Arbuckle (without his cat, Garfield) is sitting silently. Some text is in Japanese between the first and second panels reading: "翻訳者注:私は踊ることができます。" ("Translator's note: I can dance.) Jon's mouth is backwards, and the background changes into a swirl. Jon says he can anything? Jon Arbuckle disappears. Then a Windows 95 dialogue box from 1995 appears with one Garfield looking desperate in front of it and another Garfield looking behind it.

The author has a fun fact for you, Garfield never speaks English in this second version, but "Jon" doesn't count.
