Explanation[edit | edit source]

In the original, Jon buttered Garfield up before saying that cats are gullible, at which point Garfield shredded his newspaper, and it was a joke that Jon said cats can't take. Here, the author makes reference to several internal memes (of varying popularity) at Square Root of Minus Garfield. At the last one, Garfield shreds the newspaper, and Jon says cats can't take a meme, suggesting that Garfield didn't realize he was just talking about memes until the last one.

The title is a pun on memes and the song "Thanks for the Memory", written by Leo Robin and composed by Ralph Rainger.

The author writes:[edit | edit source]

No offense intended to the perpetuators of these fine memes. (Or, for that matter, those tired of them.)

Original strip: 2010-03-21.

Transcript[edit | edit source]

{Jon is "reading" a newspaper to Garfield.}
Jon: Hmm...
Jon: It says here that snails are slow...
Garfield: Check.
Jon: ...and that Garfield ate Jon's donut...
Garfield: Check.
Jon: ...and that I glued a blender to my face...
Garfield: Big check.
Jon: ...and that mice have taken over this house in the name of an empire...
Garfield: Checkarooni.
Jon: ...and that the world is constantly changing...
Garfield: Che... {wide-eyed} wait a minute.
{Garfield is gone, and Jon is holding the only non-shredded piece of newspaper left; the rest is strewn across The Ledge.}
Jon: Oh, look. It says that cats can't take a meme.
