Explanation[edit | edit source]

In the original, Garfield was using Nermal to troll for dogs; here, he's trolling for snark, in other words, using him as Snark Bait. The author does not fail to provide, as the last line of the transcript is fairly sarcastic.

The author's notes make reference to the Lewis Carroll poem The Hunting of the Snark: An Agony in 8 Fits, in that "Just the place for a snark!" is something said by the Bellman to get the others on the voyage to believe they are likely to catch a snark at that location. However, it is also revealed that if the snark happens to be a Boojum, the hunter who finds it will "softly and suddenly vanish away, and never be met with again." The title of the strip combines this pronouncement with a line from the My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic episode "Sleepless in Ponyville", in which a story is told about the Headless Horse, leading to the cliché ending "and they were never heard from ever again". Scootaloo, who hears this story, later has a nightmare about the Headless Horse. During the nightmare, she says, "If The Headless Horse catches me, I'm never gonna be heard from again! And I wanna be heard from!", thus reiterating the fate of those caught, and giving voice to the usually-unspoken desire not to have it happen.

The author writes:[edit | edit source]

I think you will agree that that was just the place for a snark.

Original strip: 1981-06-04.

Transcript[edit | edit source]

{Garfield, holding a ball of yarn behind his back, beckons to an obliviously-delighted Nermal, who approaches.}
Garfield: Come here, Nermal.
{Garfield ties up Nermal with the yarn. Nermal seems to have grasped that this is not about to be an enjoyable venture.}
Garfield: Make yourself useful.
{Garfield drags Nermal past Jon, who seems relatively unconcerned.}
Jon: Where are you going?
Garfield: Trolling for snark.
{...Yeah, I'm sure that'll be hard to find.}
