Explanation[edit | edit source]

Jon had his new journal so he can keep track of all the exciting things that happened to him. Jon says "Darn" nine times in the second and third panel. Garfield looks at the reader and says that every pen in the house ran out of ink on the first day.

Ok, so the author saw the Garfield strip in the Garfield Minus Garfield site, and he thought it would be funnier if Jon was dull rather than stupid, and then when he saw the original Garfield strip, he had decided that it would be even funnier if Garfield unemotionally stared at Jon (off-screen) who had recounted his boring hobby.

Now Jon is saying "yarn" twelve times and Garfield is just staring at Jon, oblivious to his banality, or perhaps to anything, and in the third panel, it gets darker but is the same as panel 2.

The author writes:[edit | edit source]

I saw this strip first on the Garfield Minus Garfield site, thought it would be funnier if Jon were dull rather than stupid, and then when I saw the original strip I decided it would be even funnier if Garfield was unemotionally staring at his owner as he recounted his boring* hobby.

Original strip: 2003-02-24.
