Explanation[edit | edit source]

First things first: This was originally a Sunday strip. The original story was one in which Jon was drinking a root beer, but Garfield made a funny face, causing him to snort root beer through his nose. The description of what it felt like drove Garfield away from his meal.

This strip uses only panels 3, 2, and 7, the latter two being left unaltered. The new first panel's dialogue is altered to a pun between root beer and the UNIX term root, meaning the first account that has total access to the operating system and its configuration, found at the root of the directory structure. Since one doesn't want just anyone being able to access these things, only the root account has permission. Thus, root beer preventing access to anyone without the permission to drink it.
