Explanation[edit | edit source]

In the original Garfield strip, Jon gives Garfield a snack, puts liver on the plate, puts it on the table, gives it to Garfield, which Garfield hates. Jon tells Garfield that the liver is good, so he tastes it, and Garfield tries it, but Jon looks to the right and sees a mouse. Notice that the plate is missing on the sixth panel. Jon points at a mouse and Garfield just stares at the mouse and turns his head the other way to find the mouse. Jon asks Garfield angrily, "Why can't you chase mice like other cats?", and Garfield says to the viewer that if Jon eats one first, he'll consider it. Here, the plate is in the sixth panel.

Transcript[edit | edit source]

Jon: How about a snack, Garfield?
Jon: Here's some liver left from dinner
Garfield: Blech!
Jon: It's good. Really. Watch me
{Jon eats some of the liver}
Jon: M-m-m-m nummy, nummy, nummy
Garfield: Oh, very well
{Garfield starts eating the liver}
{Jon suddenly turns to look at the other direction. A mouse runs past them on the table}
Jon: A MOUSE! GET IT!
{Garfield looks at the mouse but continues eating the liver}
Jon: Garfield, why can't you chase mice like other cats?
Garfield: If Jon eats one first, I'll consider it

The author writes:[edit | edit source]

Almost went with removing the mouse altogether and replacing Jon's line with "A plate has appeared!" in the 3rd to last panel.
