Explanation[edit | edit source]

In the original Garfield strip, the word that this edit has placed a censor bar over was "pants". Like the rest of the Square Root of Minus Garfield strips that contain "Censor", whether as "Censored" or "Censorship" or some other form of the word, this strip shows what happens when unnecessary censoring is employed: the reader's mind assumes there was something that might be considered to warrant censoring, and fills in something that the rest of the work suggests.

In this case, it seems to be suggesting Jon's... organ. This idea is further cemented by three of Garfield's alternative punchlines, all rejected in favor of the original.

The author writes:[edit | edit source]

I came up with several alternate punchlines for this strip, such as...

  • Garfield: Before the third date?
  • Garfield: It looks like a frozen pudding pop.
  • Garfield: It doesn't seem to be bitten off

and

  • Garfield: Did you play Battletoads?

I decided to keep it simple and stick with the original punchline.

Original strip: 2005-05-10.
