Explanation[edit | edit source]

In the original, Jon said it was National Cartoonists Day, and Garfield's snore was represented by a picture of a log being sawn in response. Here, Jon said it was Cinco de Mayo, the observance for which May 5 -- the date of the comic -- is more famous, at least in some cultures; the log and saw were replaced by an image of the Mexican flag, cut to form a "Z".

See Cinco de Mayo, and Zaragoza on Wikipedia.

One stereotype that has been held by some is that Mexicans are lazy. The author probably doesn't believe the stereotype, and was only looking to portray an aspect of an observance that landed on the day the original strip was published on.

The author writes:[edit | edit source]

DISCLAIMER: Portrayal of Garfield's laziness should not be taken as a statement regarding Mexicans. The only reason for the "Z" to be made out of a Mexican flag is because of the date the original strip was published on.

Original strip: 2017-05-05.
