Explanation[edit | edit source]

The author writes:[edit | edit source]

The fun thing about a comic like Garfield is that it's been around long enough to have a comic for many important dates, both in real-world history and in fiction. The Empire Strikes Back turns 40 this year, and I figured it might be fun to do something with that regarding the coinciding comic. I'm sure I could've gone many directions with this - perhaps having Garfield reference the movie in some capacity, or just have him refer to the racquet as a lightsaber - but figured it would make for some anti-humor/non-sequitur to have him quote the first paragraph of the scroll. One could imagine perhaps Garfield is just hyper-fixating on his interest for this franchise, quoting it word-for-word while rotating a tennis racket aimlessly. I can definitely relate.

Original strip: 1980-05-21.

Transcript[edit | edit source]

Garfield {facing audience, relaxedly holding tennis racket in a way that allows it to also face audience}: It is a dark time for the Rebellion. Although the Death Star has been destroyed,
Garfield {now facing forward, holding tennis racket to be parallel with the ground while posing as if balancing on one foot}: Imperial troops have driven Rebel forces from their hidden base...
Garfield {once again facing audience, in a more relaxed pose while continuing to hold tennis racket parallel to the ground}: ...and pursued them across the galaxy.
