Explanation[edit | edit source]

This strip takes the premise of 4145: Garfield discovers cigarettes, if not that Square Root of Minus Garfield strip itself, and further edits what was originally a whistle--which the author interpreted as looking like a stick or lollipop, potentially unaware of the April 1979 original strip's premise--and replaces it with the pipe from the 1978 original strip, tweaking the dialogue to reflect. The second panel from #4145/the April 1979 original strip is switched out for the third panel from the 1978 original strip, which leads into the third panel from #4145/the first panel of the February 1979 original strip to show the same effect #4145 went for.

The author writes:[edit | edit source]

After seeing today's strip (#4145), I was thinking about how the middle panel could be replaced with the last panel of the pipe strip to make it more look like Garfield is smoking. I also replaced the "cigarette" with a pipe because the "cigarette" looks more like a stick of a lollipop to me and I thought that the pipe was more fitting with the era of the original strips used.

Original strips: 1978-07-27, 1979-02-09, 1979-04-25.
