Explanation[edit | edit source]

As the strip's transcript states, in this strip, Odie unearths an Evil Mani-Mani Statue from EarthBound. Mani Mani Statues are used by the game's main villain, Giygas, to spread his influence. The author's notes make note of its first, optional appearance when Lier X. Agerate found it; however, Garfield's behavior in the third panel of the strip is based on the statue's second appearance, by which point the statue is owned by Mr. Carpainter and used to brainwash Happy Happy Village into insane cultists who literally turn the village blue.

Garfield's line in the third panel is a line spoken by one of the insane cultists in the game; contrary to some popular belief, the line was faithfully translated and was not an instance of "go to hell" that fell afoul of Nintendo censorship policies at the time.

The author writes:[edit | edit source]

Odie's incessant digging unearthed the Evil Mani Mani Statue before Lier X. Agerate found it!

Blue Garfield adapted from the Garfield and Friends episode "Mistakes Will Happen".

Original strip: 1983-07-26.
