Explanation[edit | edit source]

The author writes:[edit | edit source]

The original comic implies that Garfield is fully capable of summoning down divine lightning on anyone he pleases. Imagine how many episodes of Garfield and Friends would be over in seconds if he made liberal use of this ability...

Original strip: 1980-05-30.

Transcript[edit | edit source]

Garfield: Some people say I'm mean to Odie. Don't get me wrong, I love dogs. And if I'm lying, may lightning strike me
{Garfield stares up at the sky, presumably expecting to be hit by lightning now that he's delivered the punchline}
{Garfield continues to stare at the sky for another panel, presumably confused as to why the expected punchline of him being struck by lightning is not occurring}
