Explanation[edit | edit source]

The author writes:[edit | edit source]

I've been visiting this site for years, having a good laugh at the (incredibly creative) insanity that's been forged in the fires of Garfield remixing. I've submitted a few meme strips over the years, always meaning to come up with a more original stand-alone type joke whenever I've done so. And now, at long last, I have completely given up on that idea and just gone with the old 'Strip 1 with a twist' format; in this case, the twist being that I've redrawn the whole thing in the style of a comic book. Or - you know, a comic book of the type more akin to The Phantom than Footrot Flats.

That was my intention, anyway. Then I tried to draw the scene from memory, and it all sort of went sideways about halfway through panel 2.

Original strip: 1978-06-19.

Transcript[edit | edit source]

{The panels are arranged to fit an A-paper page, and the characters are - you might say almost hideously - detailed}
{Panel 1. Jon is sitting at a desk, giving a thumbs-up for no reason, while the moon, a desk lamp and a coffee mug with '#1 cartoonist' watch silently}
Jon: Hi there! I'm Jon Arbuckle, a cartoonist, and this is my cat, Garfield!
{Panel 2. A close-up of an orange cat's face screaming while hanging off a sofa arm}
Garfield: HELLO I AM GARFIELD AND THIS IS MY SOFA APPARENTLY
{Panel 3. The drawings are distinctly lower-quality; Jon is crouching to look at Garfield, who is still hanging from a sofa arm}
Jon: Our only thought is to... entertain you?
Garfield: FEED ME
Garfield: Also the litter needs changed [ie it 'needs to be changed', with the verb dropped]
