Explanation[edit | edit source]

The original strip was about it being Phony Smile Day, and calling out Odie for bringing in a real smile. In this one, Jon and Odie's smiles are turned into a reference to the Season 5 premier of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, in which there is an entire town of ponies who've given up their cutie marks in exchange for equal signs, much like the ones on Jon's shirt and Garfield's hip -- in the name of "equality". The smiles seen on the townsfolk are enough to put Pinkie Pie -- the pony seen here -- on edge.

Thus, when Jon and Garfield welcome her with phony smiles, she's not happy about it.

The strip title is a pun on the episode title, which refers to the magical massive friendship problem detector which came with the new castle.

The thread referred to started out pointing out the work of Siosilvar, who had made only three strips, each of which were three panels of Garfield grinning. (Whether or not this subconsciously contributed to Nyperold's eventual decision to use the "Phony Smile Day" strip is impossible to tell.) It then proceeded to ask for nominations for best strip by an author with only one published. Nyperold went through the authors' pages looking for such authors, and looking at the strips when he saw only one. It was in the process of doing this that he encountered one by Frank Kong, Jr. In it, Jon's skin color had been changed, and he was alone. (Not to be confused with the one in which Garfield was present, and his fur color had been changed.)

The author writes:[edit | edit source]

While going through the authors' pages and looking at their works, I saw No. 740 and decided to put its original strip to good use again. So you have this thread in part to thank for it.

Said original strip: 1995-12-01.
