Explanation[edit | edit source]

This strip is the original GoComics presentation of the original strip, with the donut colored pink despite being stated by Garfield to be green. GoComics itself has switched to a corrected strip, and based on when this strip ran on Square Root of Minus Garfield, Garfield Fully Caffeinated: His 75th Book presumably also features a corrected version of the strip (this strip ran in March 2022, the Garfield book featuring the original strip was released in December 2023).

The author's notes was amended by the editor to include two efforts by Square Root of Minus Garfield contributors to make their own corrections to the strip, based on the original GoComics error. MarioGarfield's author's note is fully straightforward. Matthew Prower's author's notes make mention of the purging of the garfield.com archive and suggesting that action would prevent the public at large from knowing what Jim Davis and his assistants intended the coloring to be; Matthew Prower may not have been aware that original Garfield strips even get published in official book compilations (even factoring in the original strip had not yet been released in one at the time this Square Root of Minus Garfield strip ran) and have only done so in full color since Garfield Beefs Up: His 37th Book (and the first 36, initially printed in black-and-white, were eventually reprinted in color), hence it is likely that even if GoComics had never fixed their error, what eventually became Garfield Fully Caffeinated: His 75th Book would have ran the intended coloring anyway. (Garfield Livin' The Sweet Life: His 72nd Book was the most recent book at the time this strip first ran on Square Root of Minus Garfield, and Garfield What Leftovers?: His 71st Book was the most recent book at the time the original strip first ran in newspapers.)

The following day's strip makes fun of the initial error in a different fashion from those shown in the compilation in the author's notes; the methodology it uses to poke fun at the error may explain why it was run as its own strip and not as part of the compilation in the author's notes of this one.

The author writes:[edit | edit source]

This is the original version published of the comic from 2021-08-30 (you can see it on the Internet Archive).

I think it's funnier this way.

[As you can tell from the original strip link below, the comic has since been corrected. It was Natty who sent in this copy of the original version.

HOWEVER! In the interim between the erroneous strip's first publication and its revision, two SRoMG contributors sent in their own rectified strips. This is MarioGarfield's:]

The Green Donut Garfield: I'm having a green donut {Garfield eats the green donut} Garfield: Everything green is a vegetable, you know

In the original comic, Garfield says that the Donut is green even though it's pink, so I correct him by redrawing the donut the right color.

[...and this is Matthew Prower's:]

Garfield Goes Green Garfield: I'm having a green donut {Garfield eats the donut, which has green frosting on it} Garfield: Everything green is a vegetable, you know

Once again, the colorist of the GoComics prints fail us, and thanks to the purging of the Garfield site, we may never see what the official PAWS prints colored that donut

They were quick off the mark! -Ed]

Original strip: 2021-08-30.

{There is a donut on the table, but the icing is pink. It is by no stretch of the imagination green}
