Explanation[edit | edit source]

This strip is a compilation of selected panels from the original Garfield strips that ran on the dates of each United States presidential public inauguration between Garfield's debut and submission; the strip presumably did not spend enough time in the queue to miss an inauguration en route, as it includes the most recent inauguration at the time this strip first ran. The public inaugurations were presumably used in order to keep all panels as weekday format, as the two deviations from official inaugurations--second Reagan in 1985 and second Obama in 2013--both had the date of the official inauguration as a Sunday; official inaugurations are always on the January 20 after the corresponding presidential election, with them being one in the same with public inaugurations unless the official inauguration date falls on a Sunday, in which case the public inauguration takes place the following day (January 21). Any potential future inaccuracies implying the Trump or Biden inaugurations as being the only ones would not become apparent until the next inauguration on 2025-01-20, and only in the event either Joe Biden or Donald Trump were to win the 2024 United States presidential election and survive to the following inauguration (their depicted predecessors are either term-limited [Clinton, George W. Bush, Obama], deceased [George H.W. Bush], or both [Reagan]).

The publication schedule of Garfield's predecessor strip, Jon, implies that a strip would have run on the date of the inauguration of Jimmy Carter, 1977-01-20; however, the known archives heavily imply that Jon skipped that week and did not run an edition on the date of the Carter inauguration, thus the Garfield that ran on the first Reagan inauguration was the first time a primarily Jim Davis-created work ran on the date of a presidential inauguration. Jon<nowiki>'<nowiki> own predecessor, Gnorm Gnat, had not debuted at the time of the second Richard Nixon inauguration (it debuted on 1973-03-01), and publication schedule would imply there would not have been a 1973-01-20 edition even if it had debuted by then (January 20 was a Saturday that year; Gnorm Gnat and Jon both ran Thursdays); the intra-term inauguration of Gerald Ford was on a Friday (1974-08-09) and similarly did not see Gnorm Gnat run that day.

The choice of interestingness of panel choice and the fittingness of the panel corresponding to the Trump inauguration are the author's own, and do not necessarily correspond to the views of Square Root of Minus Garfield or this very wiki.

The author writes:[edit | edit source]

The most visually interesting panel from every US presidential inauguration since the comic first ran. Forgive the politicalness, but I can't get over how fitting Trump's panel is.
