Explanation[edit | edit source]

This strip is essentially a dramatization as to how a filthy Easter egg in the direct-to-video feature Garfield Gets Real potentially came to be. This Cracked article (NSFW) explains said filthy Easter egg in detail, including a clear version of the filthy edited Garfield comic--an edited version of the 2005-06-26 original strip that would have not looked out of place on Square Root of Minus Garfield if it weren't for Square Root of Minus Garfield's family-friendly scope--that got used in the Easter egg. The Easter egg is apparently not clear enough to have much of an impact on various services that offer it, and it bears family-friendly ratings of U in Britain and G in Australia; Garfield Gets Real is not rated by the United States's MPAA, is presented as G-rated on The Roku Channel, and is presented as TV-G on Tubi, with neither Roku nor Tubi having appeared to have censored the Easter egg. It is unknown whether any actual background designers' careers were ruined by the presence of this Easter egg.

Garfield Gets Real itself is notable for bringing together the cast, production, and visual elements that would eventually manifest as The Garfield Show, although The Garfield Show does not share continuity with the direct-to-video films, including Garfield Gets Real, that preceded it.

The author writes:[edit | edit source]

Yes, this is really a thing. Except that in Garfield Gets Real, it's completely uncensored. That's right, Jon cursing up a storm is now canon. This is the only rational explanation.
