Explanation[edit | edit source]

Return of the Obra Dinn is an indie adventure game released in 2018 by Lucas Pope. The game, set in 1802, has the player investigate a wrecked cargo ship using a stopwatch that allows them to witness moments in the past. Each moment is interpreted as a snippet of audio with dialogue shown as subtitles, before revealing the exact moment of a character's death.

The strip adapts the window strip in the style of one of these cutscenes, complete with the monochromatic shading the game uses. Due to Garfield's thoughts being inaudible, the panel that would feature his thoughts is left blank.

The title of the strip is a reference to the entries the player is tasked with filling out, explaining the fate of a particular crew member or passenger.

The author writes:[edit | edit source]

If you thought this was a silent movie reference, may I interest you in Return of the Obra Dinn?

Original strip: 1981-03-29.
