Explanation[edit | edit source]

The original strip had a plate of toroid doughnuts with pink icing. Figuring Garfield should know his pastries better than that, the author removed the holes, making it quite likely that they are, indeed, iced jelly-filled doughnuts.

The author's note is a reference to the animutation "Hyakugojyuuichi" ("One Hundred Fifty-One"), the first ending theme song of the first Japanese Pokémon anime series. This animutation mishears a part of the song as "TV says doughnuts are high in fat", giving the author a connection to the strip content; the misheard lines in the rest of the chorus are represented in the author's notes.

The author writes:[edit | edit source]

Kazoo found a hobo in my room. It's Princess Leia, the yodel of life; gimme my sweater back, or I'll play the guitar!

Original strip: 1991-09-25.

Transcript[edit | edit source]

{Jon has a plate of iced jelly doughnuts, and is about to eat one when Garfield comes rushing in, all in a panic}
Garfield: Jon! Jon! The TV just said that giant mutant spiders are crushing the city!!
Garfield: And that a five thousand foot tidal wave is headed directly our way!! And... and...
{Garfield notices the pastries, and leans over them with clasped paws and a smile}
Garfield: Are those jelly doughnuts?
