Explanation[edit | edit source]

In the original, Garfield's head shape was from fitting an entire loaf of bread in his mouth at once. Here, he's apparently convinced Jim Davis to draw him differently. It wouldn't be the first time Garfield's changed in appearance, after all.

Original strip: 1989-07-17.

Transcript[edit | edit source]

{Garfield stands by the ledge with a white cloth nearby. Jon stands near, facing away}
Garfield: I did it!
{Garfield grins at Jon. No indication is given as to what prompted Jon to turn his head, unless he heard the "I did it!"}
Garfield: I got the cartoonist to get me an art shift!
{Either Jon disapproves of Garfield's new appearance or is envious that he didn't get a new appearance of his own}
Jon: Congratulations, Garfield
