Explanation[edit | edit source]

The original panel had Garfield wanting to hitch a ride to Abu Dhabi, a city in the United Arab Emirates; in the context of the comic, it was because he had missed overhearing a critical part of Jon's phone call, which would have indicated that Jon's checkup and tune-up was intended for his car, not Garfield. Here, the final panel has been isolated, and his intended destination replaced with a city in Australia, on the western coast. The author used a site called Antipodr to locate the point on the exact opposite side of the earth from where he is, and then figured out a nearby point on land, since that ended up in the ocean.

The title is a line from the song "Other Side of the World" by KT Tunstall.

The author writes:[edit | edit source]

Why settle for somewhere merely far away when Antipodr can find the exact opposite point on the world? Of course, Augusta, Western Australia isn't quite the exact opposite point on the world from Indiana, but it is one of the nearest places on land to it. I don't imagine Garfield would want to be sent out into the open ocean. There's no lasagna out there, for one thing.

Original strip: 1981-10-04.
