Explanation[edit | edit source]

This strip places a glowing effect over a bowl and Garfield suggesting he ate a bowl of uranium-255 (which replaced the hard candy of the original strip). The author's note states that the author had only found out the day before submission that there is no such thing as uranium-255; known isotopes of uranium have atomic weights ranging from 214 to 242, with three isotopes occurring naturally. Interestingly, an actual uranium isotope ending in 5, uranium-235, is a well-known isotope of uranium (one of the two rarer of the three naturally-occurring isotopes) known for being a starter isotope in nuclear fission reactions, which suggests the author may, at the time of initially creating this strip, have had this isotope in mind but misremembered its atomic weight.

The author writes:[edit | edit source]

I made this at least a year ago, (as of writing) and it's also possibly the first edit I've made to a Garfield strip. Since yesterday had I learnt that Uranium-255 is not a real uranium isotope. Oh well.

Original strip: 1998-12-05.
