Explanation[edit | edit source]

The title, as well as every sentence in the author note and transcript, is a reference to a They Might Be Giants song.

  • The title: "Destination Moon"
  • "I want to see Garfield again, slowly twisting in the wind": "Twisting"
  • "If you've got lasagna, boy, forget about it": "(She Was A) Hotel Detective"
  • "Garfield should get beat up for stating his beliefs": "Shoehorn with Teeth"
  • "This cookie jar is protected by Viper": "I Can Hear You"
  • "God forbid a vaguer reference": "On Earth My Nina"
  • "Jon and Garfield are having a good time": "We're The Replacements"
  • "The wall is a stormy pink": "Stormy Pinkness"
  • "No-one ever seems to care if it's not": "Hey, Mr. DJ, I Thought You Said We Had A Deal"
  • "ninety-three miles times a million more": "Moving to the Sun"
  • "flying high above the sky": "For Science"
  • "a huge atom-smashing machine": "Why Does The Sun Shine? (The Sun Is A Mass Of Incandescent Gas)"
  • "Nothing gets said": "Cabbagetown"
  • "Manhattan sinks under the sea": "I'll Sink Manhattan"
  • "mass culture references": "The World's Address (Joshua Fried Remix)"

The comic itself, however, is just a simple edit of 2011-11-12, where Garfield launching into the air is caused by nothing, and Jon does not react in the slightest.

The author writes:[edit | edit source]

I want to see Garfield again, slowly twisting in the wind (though his head in a recliner seat will do). If you've got lasagna, boy, forget about it. Garfield should get beat up for stating his beliefs. This cookie jar is protected by Viper. God forbid a vaguer reference.

[Instrumental.]

Original strip: 2011-11-12.

Transcript[edit | edit source]

{Jon and Garfield are having a good time. The wall is a stormy pink. No-one ever seems to care if it's not}
{Garfield springs up ninety-three miles times a million more, flying high above the sky, presumably into a huge atom-smashing machine}
{Nothing gets said. Offscreen, Manhattan sinks under the sea from mass culture references}
