Paul Reubens, better known as Pee-Wee Herman to many, passed away at age 70 on July 30th, 2023, to the shock of his many, many fans spanning generations. Those of us who saw the CBS Saturday morning lineup between 1988-1991 remember that for those few years his iconic show Pee-Wee's Playhouse (began 1986) shared the schedule with Garfield & Friends (unfortunately there aren't many promos on YouTube spotlighting them both specifically, except this one which has very low volume). Sadly, there apparently never was a promo where they interacted, which would've been a kid's dream back then. Now, I'm sure some of you might imagine Garfield would not get along with Pee-Wee, as he was loud, hyper, and honestly shared a lot of "dorky" traits with Jon... but here's the thing about Garfield that I'm sure longtime fans know: over the years his personality has fluctuated from a grumpy old man to a hyper, fun-loving party animal, and back again. Over and over, depending on the situation and audience. Since during Garfield & Friends his main audience was kids, the party animal persona was more prominent during that era, so I think they would've gotten along just fine... if Garfield was ready to party. And he was. We all were. Saturday rocked.

Sorry if this is more sad than funny but I'm still processing the situation too and I guess creating is one of the better ways to deal with this sort of thing. Rest in peace, Paul. May Pee-Wee ride his bike to the Playhouse in the sky.

Original strips: 1982-11-06, 2000-05-27.

Transcript[edit | edit source]

{Garfield walks along the grass, where we see a hill in the distance with Pee-Wee's Playhouse on top}
{Garfield stops and looks solemnly at the Playhouse. Despite it still looking its whimsical self on the outside, it has gone quiet on the inside, and Garfield knows why...}
Garfield: You were a noisy neighbor... but when I was ready to party, you had the best digs
{Garfield sits down, still processing the situation. A single tear falls from his eyes}
Garfield: So long, old friend
