Explanation[edit | edit source]

Garfield Large and In Charge, which the strip title is a pun of, is the 45th book of Garfield strips, spanning from April 18, 2004 to November 13, 2004. The strip itself is untouched, but is now captioned to say "My Hobby: Snowman headhunting." This is a reference to the "My Hobby" series on xkcd, in which "Cueball" apparently had some hobby or another that often seems designed to confuse, annoy, or terrify onlookers in some clever way. This seems perfect for Garfield.

The "Barge" refers to the xkcd comic "Barge", which is itself part of the "My Hobby" series. It is the source of every letter used in the strip's caption.

The author writes:[edit | edit source]

I promise there's a connection with the last word in the title, if tenuous.

Original strip: 1998-02-21.

Transcript[edit | edit source]

{Jon is on the phone, and you know what that means. Well, okay, he's not pursuing a date. Or ordering food. Or talking to his mother... You know what? Let's listen in}

Jon: I'm very sorry, sir. Please apologize to little Timmy for me. It won't happen again

{Ah, an empty promise. It's not like he has much power to keep Garfield from doing things that hurt or annoy him, much less anyone else. Nevertheless, he stands at the door and looks out}

Jon: Oh, Garfield

{Garfield is standing on the front stoop and smiling. Behind him is a pile of snow shaped into spheroids and decorated with carrots and bits of coal}

Jon: About your hobby...
