Explanation[edit | edit source]

Some scientific calculators have functions named Rec() and Pol(), which convert a complex number from polar to rectangular form, and vice versa. The title uses "Rec(Garfield, Garfield)" to refer to a complex number whose real and imaginary part are both Garfield, though this is not the proper usage of Rec(), as Rec() itself does not return a complex number, but rather interprets the two input numbers as a complex number written in polar form, and returns the coordinates of the implied complex number in rectangular form. A proper name for this comic could be "Garfield Plus (i Times Garfield)".

The author used the "random" button on SRoMG to get a random number, n, then combined the nth strip of Garfield with the nth strip of Square Root of Minus Garfield. SRoMG has less strips than Garfield, which is why it was used to generate n.

The author writes:[edit | edit source]

I took an nth SRoMG strip and combined it with an nth Garfield strip, where n was decided with the "Random" button on SRoMG and of course it turned out to be a Pudding Pops strip.

sluha.pri.ee includes the number of each strip, though you have to navigate by date, so I just found the 613th strip (1980-02-21) by trial and error. Determining what date is a certain amount of days after another date is probably a feature of the Doomsday method, but... look. I'm making Garfield edits here. I don't have time for such frivolous non-sense.

Pol(Garfield, Garfield) will be left as an exercise to the reader.

Original Square Root of Minus Garfield strip: 2011-01-22.

Original strips: 1978-06-19, 1979-06-06, 1980-02-21, 2001-11-28.

Transcript[edit | edit source]

{Jon blows a raspberry at Garfield, who is strangely crusty, and doesn't seem to pay any mind}
{Jon swipes at Garfield. Garfield's head expands and retracts such that his left cheek is nearly touching his thigh, and his tail becomes much larger}
{Garfield has now become a misproportioned abomination from the year 2001. He is propping himself upright and peering over his owner's shoulder. Jon, unfazed, is stamping a letter}
Garfield: They haven't stopped making frozen pudding pops, have they?
