Explanation[edit | edit source]

This strip turns a picture of Saber from Fate/Stay Night, the game that began the Fate series of visual novels, into a strip panel, then uses two panels from the credited original Garfield strip to portray Garfield as mocking the series, possibly by a perceived invocation of the I Am Not Shazam trope involving Garfield calling Saber "Fate".

This strip debuted on, for most of the world, the date after a remastered version of Fate/Stay Night was announced for upcoming release on PC and Nintendo Switch complete with the game's first ever release in western territories; it is presumed this strip was made long before this point, but drawn into the buffer in conjunction with the announcement. The announcement first made the rounds at roughly 1:45 PM UTC on 2024-01-30, with this strip debuting at 9:10 AM UTC the following day (9:10 AM is the time, not affected by daylight saving time anywhere, new strips of mezzacotta features typically go live). A small portion of the world saw the strip debut on the same day as the announcement; time zones between UTC -9:30 westward toward UTC -12 saw both announcement and strip appear on 2024-01-30 (the latter at 11:40 PM UTC -9:30), while time zones between UTC +10:30 eastward toward UTC +14 saw both announcement and strip appear on 2024-01-31 (the announcement at roughly 12:15 AM UTC +10:30). It is unknown which of these time situations is true where within Australia the Comics Irregulars are headquartered, as daylight saving time was in effect in the southern states at the time; the states and territory that observe daylight saving time (UTC +10:30 in South Australia; UTC +11 in New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania, and the Australian Capital Territory) had already begun 2024-01-31 at the time of the announcement, but the states and territory not observing daylight saving time (UTC +8 in Western Australia; UTC +9:30 in the Northern Territory; UTC +10 in Queensland) were still on 2024-01-30 at the time of the announcement.

The original version of Fate/Stay Night is a very much not-safe-for-work release; the new remastered version is, however, based on cleaner versions of the game previously released on Playstation 2 and Playstation Vita, with the most work-unsafe content already removed.

Any views concerning Fate/Stay Night conveyed within the jabs portrayed in the strip are the author's own, and do not reflect the views of Square Root of Minus Garfield or the views of this very wiki.
