Explanation[edit | edit source]

This strip's inspiration was inspired by the disagreement between 1045: The First Thing You Said and 1046: Continuity Fixed Garfield over the words Liz first spoke toward Jon; those two plus the original 2012 Garfield strip were all cited in the author's notes among the various recollections. As such, the author went back to the days of Jon, found the first thing Liz said to Jon there (which, unlike in Garfield proper, was clearly directed toward Jon and were indeed the words Liz first spoke in the entire mythos), and whipped up this strip; the author also included the second thing as Jon requested in the original 2012 Garfield strip within the author's notes.

The author's quip about Liz having to work her way through vet school is an attempt to explain Liz's employment statuses back in the Jon days; it would imply that Liz worked her way through vet school into her job in Garfield through a job at Irma's diner from the Jon days.

The guy Liz was dating back in September 1976 appears to have never made it into Garfield proper.

The author writes[edit | edit source]

I've seen various recollections as to the first thing Liz said to Jon. "Nice teddy bear tie?" "Who's next, please?" "It's short for lizard?" I say you're all wrong! Had to dig real deep for this dirt, at THAT time she wasn't even a veterinarian and was already dating someone else, and she hadn't even taken that job at Irma's diner yet! (Hey, she had to work through vet school somehow...)

(For the record, the second thing? "Surprise" on 1976-09-30, while with the guy she was dating at the time...)

Original Jon strip: 1976-09-23

Original strip: 2012-03-02

Transcript[edit | edit source]

Jon: Liz, remember when we first met?
Jon: Remember the first thing you said to me?
Liz: Call me "repulsed"
Jon: Okay, the second thing

Trivia[edit | edit source]

  • The original Jon strip originally had a link to here attached to the credit; the Jon strip date was delinked from this credit when published.
  • Jon's first line was initially transcribed "Liz, remember when we first met?" in error; the word "first" should not have been part of that line.
