Explanation[edit | edit source]

This strip was made to coincide with the total solar eclipse that ran on that date along most of its path; as the author's notes state, Garfield's setting of Muncie, Indiana was on the path of totality, occurring at roughly 3:10 PM EDT (daylight saving time was in effect in the United States at the time of the event, thus placing Muncie on UTC -4 at that point). This strip exaggerates the effect of the eclipse, making it look like it fully affects the inside of the Arbuckle household.

The author writes:[edit | edit source]

Per NASA's website, Muncie, IN is on the path of totality.

Original strip: 1990-07-04.

Transcript[edit | edit source]

Jon {shocked}: Was that an eclipse?
Jon {contented}: Yes
