Explanation[edit | edit source]

In the original strip, Garfield attracted human women. In this edit, Garfield's admirers are ponies from My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. What this says about the kind of women Jon's been attracting is unclear.

The title is a play on a song from the episode "Hearts and Hooves Day", which is about a holiday of the same name that is analogous to Valentine's Day. In it, the Cutie Mark Crusaders -- Apple Bloom, Scootaloo, and Sweetie Belle -- attempt to find a suitable "special somepony" for their teacher, Cheerilee. The song follows their search as they eliminate various males from the running (notably, the thought of a female for another female doesn't even cross their minds) accompanied by the line "This one's (too old/too tall/whatever)". They eventually find that all of the ones who would be worthy of her already have one... except Apple Bloom's big brother, Big Macintosh. Hilarity ensues as the three try to get them together with magic... and then try to keep them apart after they find out why it's a bad idea to use magic for such things.

The use of ponies in the first place was probably inspired by the "GALLOP GALLOP GALLOP" in the second panel. One parameter that the author seems to have used in determining which ponies to use is having one pony from each type: Golden Harvest, an earth pony; Merry May, a pegasus; and Twinkleshine, a unicorn.

The image of Golden Harvest is from "Games Ponies Play", during the scene in which the main characters are waiting for the call to board the train home.

The image of Merry May is from "Lesson Zero", in which Twilight Sparkle realizes she's not sent a friendship report to Princess Celestia in a week, and, under the impression that one must be sent every seven days, sets out to find a friendship problem. Upon failing to do so, she decides to cause one by enchanting a doll such that anyone who sees it wants it more than anything. She had intended to cause a fight between the Cutie Mark Crusaders and then dispel the spell, pretending that she'd taught them a friendship lesson. Unfortunately, other ponies caught sight of the doll, and a massive magic-induced fight for the doll ensued, with ponies under the influence of the spell marked with traditional heart shaped in their eyes.

The image of Twinkleshine is from "Friendship is Magic, Part 1", after Twilight Sparkle was surprised by the ponies in the library tree in which she was staying during her royal duties relating to the upcoming Summer Sun Celebration.
