Explanation[edit | edit source]

"867-5309/Jenny" is a song from the 1980s performed by Tommy Tutone. In it, the person from whose perspective the song was written was a guy "who saw [her] name and number on the wall" and, like Jon here, implores her: "Jenny, don't change your number". (In real life, there has been at least one household who's changed their number because it was 867-5309, and people were calling and asking for Jenny.)

There is perhaps a pun in that one of the genres of the song is "pop rock", while the author asks if the hypothetical reader who lives in the United States of America without knowing this song has been living "under a rock".

The author writes:[edit | edit source]

If you don't know the song and you live in the USA, where have you been living? Under a rock?

Original strip from 1998-02-11.
