8th Birthday Special: Double Birthday Cake Special

Made by: Densetsu Bros

Explanation[edit | edit source]

A peculiarity in 1986 saw two consecutive birthday strips in a row; one on the 19th, and another the day after on the 20th. Since it's unclear which strip is canon (and likely not important due to the comic's loose canon), both strips were edited.

  1. The first strip ends with Garfield praising birthdays for being a day where the world revolves around you. The edit applied here gives this statement a more literal meaning by having a miniature Earth orbit Garfield.
  2. The second strip's punchline sees Garfield asking Jon what's for dessert after being given a double-chocolate fudge marshmallow cream cake, chocolate chip ice cream, sugar cookies, and a cherry phosphate, which Jon likely intended to be the dessert. This edit changes the punchline to Garfield not knowing what a cherry phosphate is, as although it doesn't take a genius to know what cake, ice cream, and cookies are, it's unlikely most people who read the original strip are familiar with phosphates. For clarification, a phosphate is a type of soft drink that uses phosphoric acid to give it a sour taste.

The author writes:[edit | edit source]

Since Garfield got two birthday strips in a row in 1986, it was only fitting to do both for him. No wonder he's so fat, with Jon feeding him so much food!

And for those of you still wondering, cherry phosphate.

Original strips: 1986-06-19, 1986-06-20.
