Explanation[edit | edit source]
The author writes:[edit | edit source]
I tried to make all three alternative endings as unfunny as possible, although I'm afraid some humor sneaked into ending C due to the possible implication that Garfield was being sarcastic and actually wanted a trial in open court, so he could squash the judge, jury, prosecutor and various officers of the court with a rolled up newspaper.
Original strip: 1997-09-24.
Transcript[edit | edit source]
Garfield: How's the wife and kids?
Spider: You squashed them yesterday!
{comic branches into three "choose your own ending" panels}
A. Garfield: You might as well go to the next strip now. There's no way I can make that funny.
B. Garfield: I would make a joke, but that would be unnecessarily mean-spirited.
C. Garfield: I can only hope he doesn't attempt to press charges against me.
