Explanation[edit | edit source]

The original strip had Jon showing Garfield his squirting flower, prompting Garfield to show his "clawing paw", presumably to talk Jon out of possibly squirting him with the flower.

Here, the strip swaps the first two panels, resulting in Garfield showing his claw before Jon stops him by showing his flower.

"Detente", to answer the author's question, means the easing of hostility or strained relations.

The author writes:[edit | edit source]

A strip that somehow still makes sense the other way around. I don't even understand "detente"'s usage here.

Original strip: 2003-04-12.

Transcript[edit | edit source]

{Jon, wearing a tartan jacket, bow tie and novelty flower, leans back in shock from a claw-bearing Garfield.}
Garfield: This is one of those clawing paws
Jon: This is one of those squirting flowers
{Jon leaves}
Garfield: {smiling} Can you say "detente"?
