Explanation[edit | edit source]

This strip sees the author having drawn a mask onto Liz as a protection measure against the then-ongoing wikipedia:COVID-19 pandemic, this strip being the third of three consecutive days of Square Root of Minus Garfield making references to the pandemic; this strip had a quick turnaround (less than a month) from the original Garfield strip, which itself first ran a little more than two months after COVID-19 had been declared a pandemic and already implemented references to social distancing measures. Jon not wearing a mask in public, as the setup implies, could potentially send multiple varying messages based on one's viewpoint (politically-driven anti-mask movements were already active by even when the original Garfield strip first ran), but as Jon has never been the brightest bulb in the shed, the intended interpretation of both original and remixed strips is that of the reckless behavior one might typically expect of Jon.

The author writes:[edit | edit source]

Challenge: Spot the pun in the filename I chose for this strip ("DoYouLoveOrHateMagpiesCrowsAndBlueJays.png").

Original strip: 2020-05-22.
