Explanation[edit | edit source]

This Square Root of Minus Garfield strip is essentially a re-creation of a scene originating from the animated television special Garfield Goes Hollywood done from the author's memory having mistaken it for a newspaper-run Garfield strip.

A thread on the Irregular Webcomic! forums, created by Manyhills based on correspondence with DanielBT, would later reveal this strip taken from the book adaptation of the television special (eleven of the twelve specials from between 1982-1991 would get book adaptations, the lone exception being the case where the special is an adaptation of an original Garfield book), quite possibly what this SRoMG strip's author saw years earlier and mistook as a newspaper-run strip.

The author writes:[edit | edit source]

For years, I thought for sure that this was a real Garfield strip. For some reason, I distinctly remember reading it years ago. I don't know whether I read a fanmade strip, or my memory simply made it up, but when I tried to look up the strip recently, using several keywords in case I didn't remember it exactly right, I was surprised to discover that there was no sign of any strip like it. I did find out that "cat on a hot tin roof" is the name of a movie, one I don't remember ever knowing about, but maybe I heard of the movie at some point and my brain turned it into a Garfield strip? Anyway, I have decided to make this strip real, as close to how I remember it as possible.

Original strips: 1979-02-12, 1990-09-13, 1990-09-17, 1990-09-18, 2003-04-28.

Transcript[edit | edit source]

{Garfield is smiling, because it's impressions week and he gets to goof off and take full advantage of being in a comic strip}
Garfield: Impressions
{Garfield holds up his finger, excited about this one. Is it a fun one to do, or is it fun because of the reference it makes?}
Garfield: Cat on a hot tin roof!
{Garfield is now bouncing on tiptoe, as if he's standing on a hot tin roof}
Garfield: OW! OH! AH! EEH!
