Explanation[edit | edit source]
This is the tenth and final installment of the Garfield Numerosity series, based on the Numerosity series from Sesame Street. This comic adapts the tenth film, which centers around the number 10. That film ended with the baker carrying 10 chocolate-layer cakes, but that scene isn't adapted. Here's each panel of the comic in order:
- 10 toes: This panel uses a panel from a comic (2011-09-04) where Garfield, Jon, Odie, and Liz go to the beach, where Jon is attacked by seagulls while the others are lying on a towel. The panel zooms in on Liz's feet to show her 10 toes.
- 10 triangles: This panel uses the cover panel from the 2000-08-20 strip. The original panel showed the title of the comic scratched into the chalkboard, with Odie standing nearby, clearly affected by the scratching. This panel crops out Odie's side and replaces the scratches with a drawing of 10 triangles stacked together to form a large one, mimicking the layout of the original scene. Technically, the upside-down triangles make 16 in total, but only the right-side up ones are counted.
- 10 pins: This panel uses a panel from a comic (2003-12-28) where Garfield, Jon, and Odie go bowling, only for Jon to accidentally harm the other patrons when he misses the lane. Since no actual bowling pins are seen in the original comic, a photo of a successful strike in bowling (where you knock down all 10 pins with one roll) is placed underneath, making it look like Jon scored a strike.
- 10 Sailor Guardians: This panel uses a photo of 10 of the Sailor Guardians from the Sailor Moon series. According to the author's notes, the original film used a scene with "10 little Indians", but due to the racist nature of that scene, later airing replaced it with a new scene featuring 10 bells. Rather than adapt the bell scene for this comic, Captain Lhurgoyf used the Sailor Guardians as a reference to the Cleveland Indians renaming themselves to the Cleveland Guardians in 2022. Luna, Artemis, and Diana are also present in this image, but they're not counted with the others.
- 10 bees: This panel uses the final panel of a comic (1995-06-25) where Garfield plucks a flower within view of a bee, who gets angry, picks it up, and swats him in the head with it. The original panel only has 1 bee, and 9 more are added here. The scene in the original film uses 10 wind-up toys instead, but according to the author's notes, it was changed to bees here to avoid repeating the earlier comics in this series.
The author writes:[edit | edit source]
Based on a Numerosity segment from Sesame Street, it counts five different sets of features.
I had used a picture of ten pins to see how Jon hits them, I used the Ten Sailor Guardians instead of "Ten Little Indians" (in later airings replaced with "Ten Bells") to make a reference to the Cleveland Indians changing its name to the Cleveland Guardians, and I used "Ten Bees" because CTW got away with using the wind-up toys more than once, so I used "Ten Bees" to allude to the man looking behind the doors in the other Numerosity segments.
Original strips: 1995-06-25, 2000-08-20, 2003-12-28, 2011-09-04.
