5841: Camerafield

Explanation[edit | edit source]
In the original strip, Jon was reading when he heard a crash. He angrily accosted Garfield, demanding, "Was that the cookie jar?!". Garfield, with his face stuffed, claimed that "gravity [was his] friend".
In this strip, Jon instead asks whether Garfield ate his camera. Garfield flies in, producing flames from where his limbs would normally be. As is noted, this is a reference to Gamera, who can also fly by tucking in his limbs and taking off, and whose name is phonetically similar to camera.
The humor comes from the sheer randomness of Garfield’s appearance—his Gamera-like appearance is completely unexplained, making the punchline even more surreal.
The author writes:[edit | edit source]
Did you eat my camera? Did you eat my camera? Did you eat my ca-me-raaaa?
(This one went through a few mutations in my mind before it reached this critical mass of incomprehensibility. Unfortunately - or fortunately - I didn't make any of the intermediary steps into comic strips, so the journey this strip took from being a joke to... whatever this is - will remain undocumented. The 'Japanfield' strips were involved, of course.)
Original Square Root of Minus Garfield strips: 2024-07-31, 2024-07-27 (indirectly).

Transcript[edit | edit source]
{Jon stands in a blue room, reading a book and minding his own business}
SFX: CRASH!
{Jon is visibly shaken}
{Jon looks over his shoulder, angrily}
Jon: GARFIELD! Did you eat my camera?
{Jon turns back to his book, abashed/horrified; Garfield has flown in from off-panel, following some sort of spinning trajectory, and has large jets of flame spouting from where his limbs should be. He - Garfield - still looks completely uninterested in anything}
Garfield: No
Trivia[edit | edit source]
- Due to a typo, this strip incorrectly lists the 2011-09-02 Garfield strip as having been used in this edit; the correct date is 2011-09-20.
