Explanation[edit | edit source]

The strip is a reference to the Mario Kart series. Green Shells (which primarily appear in main series Mario games) and Spiny Shells (also called "Blue Shells") are items that frequently appear in these games. Green Shells, functioning similarly to what they do in main series games, are normally errant after being thrown, and will occasionally even hit whoever threw one; Spiny Shells, on the other hand, always target the player in first place, and they usually never miss (the Super Horn, introduced in Mario Kart 8, can destroy all shells, including Spiny Shells, before they hit the player).

Similarly to #2525 and #2727, the strip is titled after a level of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time, but contains no overt references to that game. The author's notes mention Cheryl Blossom, a character in the Archie Comics franchise.

The author writes[edit | edit source]

I was gonna title it "Garfield Plus Mario Kart (Again)", but if I did, Cheryl Blossom would come after me. That chick is impossible to deal with. I wouldn't race against her in Mario Kart.

Original strip: 1990-12-10.

Transcript[edit | edit source]

{Garfield sticks his head out the window, while Jon narrowly avoids oncoming Green Shells}
{Seeing how enlightened Garfield is, Jon sticks his head out as well, inexplicably avoiding more Green Shells}
{Jon eventually gets hit by a Spiny Shell, proving that even the most skilled racers cannot avoid its wrath.}

Trivia[edit | edit source]

  • Although the notes mention that the strip would've been titled "Garfield Plus Mario Kart (Again)", there was never a strip explicitly titled "Garfield Plus Mario Kart". It should be noted, though, that previous strips had made Mario Kart references before this one.
