Explanation[edit | edit source]

This strip takes the 2014 original Garfield strip and gives it a twist in which Garfield's date-change stunt send him back to the very first panel of the Garfield strip. This implies that Garfield went too far back in time and thus restarted the Garfield mythos with his stunt.

This strip is the second instance of a "back too far" implication remix; the first being 2014: 36th Birthday Special: Too Far Back (Garfield's stunt writes him out of existence) and the third being 4341: Begin Again: Jon Edition (basically this strip's premise using the first strip of Garfield's predecessor Jon).

The author writes:[edit | edit source]

The 2014 birthday strip could've used a little continuity nod...

This is a good way to show Garfield went too far back!

[Ed: The title and author's note are Redgreen's; Lasagna Man submitted an identical strip a few months later.]

Original strips: 1978-06-19, 2014-06-19.

Transcript[edit | edit source]

{Garfield stands in the middle of a room, staring at a calendar}
Garfield: I don't feel like getting older.
{Garfield takes the calendar and begins writing on it}
Garfield: Maybe if I change the year, I'll get younger on my birthday.
{Garfield appears next to Jon in the first panel of the very first Garfield strip, 36 years earlier}
Jon: Hi, there... I'm Jon Arbuckle. I'm a cartoonist, and this is my cat, Garfield.
