Explanation[edit | edit source]

This strip was the final originally-scheduled installment of Square Root of Minus Garfield's birthday series celebrating the 2000-strip milestone (the following day's strip parodied the birthday series's premise); as that series was held in 2014, this strip is a remix of what was at the time the most recent "Garfield's birthday" original strip. In this strip, Garfield has the same idea of trying to age himself down by changing the calendar, but presumably does so too far and writes himself out of existence.

3191: Begin Again would take this strip's premise and put a different spin on it.

The author writes:[edit | edit source]

2014's birthday strip was... odd, to say the least. Given that the comic was dabbling with interesting subject matter, and that the negative continuity would make it something of a missed opportunity, I jumped at the chance to make something out of this concept.

Original strip: 2014-06-19.

Transcript[edit | edit source]

{Garfield stands in the middle of a room, staring at a calendar.}
Garfield: I don't feel like getting older.
{Garfield takes the calendar and begins writing on it.}
Garfield: Maybe if I change the year, I'll get younger on my birthday.
{Garfield abruptly disappears, along with the calendar}
