Explanation[edit | edit source]

In the original strip, the 3rd Saturday in December was circled. It is only possible for that to be a date from the 15th to the 21st. That year, it was the 18th, one week before Christmas. This edit corrects it, and also shades in some of the first squares to indicate that they are not days in the current month, and puts dividers on most of the bottom row to indicate that they stand for multiple days.

Note that the perception of this strip successfully correcting the original strip depends on how one perceives the workings of the calendar. Unlike later takes on attempting to correct the same original strip, 4944: Garfield plus overly accurate calendar and 5309: Garfield plus truly overly accurate calendar, this strip is considered correct in relation to 2004 if one applies a Sunday-to-Saturday perspective (December 1 was a Wednesday in 2004).

The title is a play on The Expectation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, a Catholic feast day originating in 7th-century Spain. It is celebrated on December 18th, the 3rd Saturday of the month that year, thus the day that was circled in the original.

The author writes:[edit | edit source]

I'm not doing anything with the calendar we see later that has the full name of the month and five rows for the days. I just figure those are different calendars, possibly in different rooms.

Original strip: 2004-12-01.

Transcript[edit | edit source]

{Garfield stands, staring at a calendar turned to the month of December. The last Saturday of the month, being Christmas that year, is circled and filled in with green.}
Garfield: Calendars...they hurry all year long
Garfield: —until December...
{Garfield stretches out his arms and shows his heightened teeth in frustration.}
Garfield: then they MOSEY!
