Explanation[edit | edit source]

The original strip said "cat's", an example of what is often called a "greengrocers' apostrophe", which is an apostrophe put before the "s" in non-possessive plurals. The title pokes fun at the practice, even going so far as to put an apostrophe before the "s" that ends the verb. The strip edit, however, fixes it.

The original strip had the eighth note tail-side-up, when its position would, by convention, have it pointing down and extended all the way to the staff, as in the edit. It also lacked ledger lines except for the one it was actually sitting on, so this edit added them in. The transcript has the note, derived from its apparent position, as well as the frequency of such a note.

The author writes:[edit | edit source]

Original strip: 1991-08-22.
